The game Sumo is said to have its origination from the Shinto ritual in Japan where powerful men performed in front of Kami (gods of spirit) to show them respect and gratitude for bringing a good harvest. But, later on, Sumo became a way for the fighters to compare their strength through adept-to-hand combat.
The Sumo wrestlers are called Rikishi in Japanese, which means two characters of Kami, "strength" and "warrior." There are, in total, 650 Rikishis in all the six Sumo divisions:
In Japan, the Sumo wrestlers get classified on the ranking hierarchy, which usually gets updated after every tournament based on the wrestler's performance. Those who win more matches rise in the ranks, while wrestlers who lose more matches go down.
The top division is called "Makuuchi," and the second division is called Juryo. The grand champion of Sumo is referred to as Yokozuna. Today, Sumo has become the national sport of Japan
