Tetris is a puzzle video game that requires the player to tactically move, rotate, and drop several Tetriminos falling in a rectangular Matrix at different speeds. It is important to note that the speed keeps increasing as the game proceeds. In 1984, a Russian software engineer named Alexey Pajitnov developed the Tetris game focused on basic rules that test a player’s skill and intelligence.
Strategy and speed are paramount when playing the game and when the Tetriminos exceeds the skyline, the player loses the game. Hence, the game objective is to clear as many lines as possible.
Alexey didn’t mean to make money from his game, initially the game was designed just for fun as he wanted to see if he could develop the game. It is said that he was influenced by a puzzle game called “pentominoes”, where multiple wooden shapes made from 5 squares are kept in a box. Alexey imagined the shapes to be falling from above into a glass and the player would need to guide them into place.
Pajitnov worked on the game by adapting the shapes into four squares and named it “Tetris”. The name “Tetris” comes from the latin word “tetra” which means four and “tennis”, Alexey’s beloved game.
Pajitnov then shared the game with his friends and colleagues and they loved the game. This group of players copied and shared it with other friends on floppy disks, and the game became a sensation across Moscow. When Pajitnov sent the game to his friend in Hungary, it was featured in a software exhibition at the Hungarian Institute of Technology.
It is reported that over 200 million copies of the game were sold between 1984 and 2011. Out of these 200+ million copies, 142 million were purchased as a mobile game and 70 million were sold as physical units. These figures are clear to give an impression that Tetris is one of the most popular video games since the inception of digital games. We have given a twist to the classic game and it is available as TetraBox on the Mela app.
TetraBox is said to increase the IQ and thinking ability of the players, if it is played correctly. To do so, let us go through some of the basic TetraBox game rules:
